How it Happened

His shirt didn't make it. The wild rag was used as a sling and his little chinks now have a souveniron them.

I wasn't there when it all happened obviously. But I am going to do my best to tell the story, because I know Nate isn't going to get on here and tell it.

Nate and Dusty stopped to go through a gate (not the first one of the day). Nate got off, lead the horses through, and put the bottom of the gate in and was wiring the top part of the gate in when Dusty said,"Dad the horses are moving." Nate looks back and sees that they are just eating, so tries to hurry and get the gate shut. Then the bottom of the gate comes out of the wire so Nate kneels down to fix it and sets the reins down. He's almost got it when Dusty says again, sounding a little more worried, " Dad the horses are moving." Nate hurry and finishes, jumps up, tries to walk over to the horses and realizes that it would be easier to try and get Dusty off than try to get ahold of the reins. So he reaches up to grab Dusty and the horse gets a little startled and wanders off. It takes off towards the road and Dusty is trying to hang on and Nate is telling him to hold on and that he is right behind him. There is a little lip to get up on the road so the horse takes a little leap, like they normally do go uphill, and that is when Dusty lost his grip. He falls back towards the horse's butt and then horse brings his back legs up so Dusty kind of falls backwards and to the right. He lands on his hand trying to catch himself with his arm stretched out behind him. The whole time Nate is only about 2 feet behind him. Dusty tries to use his hands to get himself up and lets out a scream. Nate tells him to stay there, then hurry and picks him up. He can see that his arm is broken. So he uses his wild rag to make a sling for him. He puts Dusty on his horse with him and has to ride 3 miles back to the truck. Nate says that it was the longest ride of his life. Dusty only cried when they were getting back on the horse, when the horse was going too fast, and whenever they would hit bumps in the truck on the way down the mountain. I am so glad Nate was there to take care of him. Dusty says he will ride again when his arm is all the way better but he wants to ride a different horse:)
